AI in SLP: Enhancing Myofunctional Therapy with Technology

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is no longer a concept of the future—it's here, and it’s quietly transforming how we work as speech-language pathologists. While much of the AI buzz has focused on general communication or voice recognition tools, there’s a growing space for using AI to elevate how we assess and deliver myofunctional therapy.

So, how can AI help in your myo-based SLP practice? Let’s explore:

  • Assessment tools with AI accuracy. Some new platforms use AI to track facial symmetry, jaw movement, and tongue mobility—providing quantifiable data and trend tracking over time. This supports better clinical decision-making and clearer communication with families and medical providers.
  • AI-assisted video analysis. These tools can flag subtle movement patterns or inconsistencies in oral rest posture or swallowing that a clinician might miss in real-time. This supports more targeted interventions and early corrections.
  • Personalized home programs. Machine learning can help customize exercise plans based on the client’s performance and progress, allowing more dynamic support between sessions.
  • Workflow automation. AI-powered scheduling, documentation tools, and client portals reduce the busywork, giving SLPs more time to focus on clinical care.

Some SLPs are even using AI to generate progress reports, write goal suggestions, or streamline intake questionnaires. While these tools shouldn’t replace clinical thinking, they can significantly reduce time spent on administrative tasks.

Important note: AI is a tool, not a replacement for clinical judgment. It enhances our practice—it doesn’t replace the power of observation, connection, and clinical expertise.

If you’ve been curious about tech, now is a great time to explore low-cost or free AI tools to start experimenting with integrating digital support into your therapy. Begin small—try using AI for one admin task or one element of session planning—and build from there.

The future of therapy will likely include both high-tech and high-touch approaches, and SLPs who embrace the tools that support them will be better equipped to serve clients efficiently and creatively.

Simon Says Speech helps you stay ahead of the curve with research-backed programs and done-for-you systems so you can integrate new tools with confidence.
