Boundaries, Burnout & Breakthroughs: What No One Tells You About Being an SLP

Let’s be honest: being a speech-language pathologist is both rewarding and exhausting. Between high caseloads, endless paperwork, emotional investment in our clients, and the pressure to keep learning and growing—it’s no wonder burnout is common in our field.

But here’s the truth that rarely gets talked about: you can love your work and still feel overwhelmed. And you’re not alone.

Burnout doesn’t always show up as dramatic breakdowns. Sometimes it looks like:

Dreading Mondays even though you care about your clients

Avoiding paperwork because you just can’t focus

Questioning your skills after a tough session

Fantasizing about leaving the field but feeling too guilty to even consider it

This blog is your permission slip to take a breath.

Start with Boundaries

Boundaries aren’t walls—they’re clarity. They protect your energy, your values, and your passion for the work.

Time boundaries: Set clear start and end times for your workday. Build in short breaks and avoid working late every night.

Emotional boundaries: You can care about your clients without taking their struggles home with you.

Technology boundaries: Resist the urge to check emails during family time. That one late-night reply can wait until morning.

Create Breakthroughs

Breakthroughs happen when you create space. Space to reflect, space to dream, space to notice what lights you up.

Ask yourself:

What parts of my job drain me?

What do I wish I had more of in my work?

What would my ideal work week look like?

Sometimes the answer is a career pivot. Sometimes it’s just one small change: dropping a client, shifting your schedule, saying no to one more committee.

For many SLPs, discovering myofunctional therapy is the breakthrough. It’s a chance to specialize, see quick wins, and build deeper connections with clients. It’s also a path to private practice—and that means more flexibility, autonomy, and freedom.

You don’t have to be stuck. You don’t have to settle. And you definitely don’t have to do it alone.

Simon Says Speech was created to help SLPs rediscover their spark, set boundaries that protect their peace, and build businesses that honor their values. From mindset coaching to done-for-you myo programs, we’re with you every step of the way.
