Making Room for Myo: How to Add Myofunctional Therapy Without Overloading Your Caseload

Juggling a full caseload as an SLP is no easy feat, especially when you're adding a specialized service like myofunctional therapy. The idea of layering one more thing onto your already-packed schedule might feel overwhelming—but it doesn’t have to be.

The key is intentional integration. Myofunctional therapy doesn’t need to be a separate track in your practice. In fact, many of the same skills you use for articulation, feeding, and even early language can be aligned with myo principles. For example, when targeting /s/ or /z/ in articulation therapy, you’re likely addressing tongue positioning—an area central to myofunctional therapy.

Here are a few practical tips:

1. Batch your evaluations. Designate one day a week or a few afternoons for new myo assessments. This helps with mental load and streamlines your workflow.

2. Use existing therapy slots. If you already see a client for articulation or feeding, you can introduce myo-based activities gradually, starting with simple posture awareness or tongue elevation exercises.

3. Educate your caseload. Many parents are eager to understand what myo is and why it matters. Host a virtual info session, send out informative handouts, or share short videos.

4. Streamline documentation. Create templates or use checklists to make writing notes easier.

5. Track your outcomes. Seeing real progress will help you feel energized and motivated to keep going.

Adding myo doesn’t have to mean adding more stress. It’s about re-framing what you’re already doing and making space for therapy that has a long-lasting impact. You may even find that the variety keeps your work more interesting and engaging.

Start small, track your success, and adjust as you go. Integrating myo isn’t about overloading your plate—it’s about shifting your approach and maximizing your impact.
