Top 5 Tools Every SLP Needs to Make Myo Simple and Streamlined

When it comes to implementing myofunctional therapy, having the right tools can make all the difference. Whether you’re just getting started or want to sharpen your current process, here are five tools every SLP should have in their myo toolbox:

Tongue depressors – These simple tools help with visual cues, tactile feedback, and positioning. They can also serve as a guide during isolated movements or mirror exercises.

Nasal mirror or fog mirror – These are essential for checking nasal vs. mouth breathing and raising client awareness. They’re a quick way to help clients see the connection between their breathing and posture.

Chewy tubes or resistance tools – These are great for strengthening and engaging the muscles involved in oral resting posture. Use them during warm-ups or specific resistance-based activities.

Myo program sheets or digital visuals – Having a structured plan (like our Tongue Tips program) helps clients and families stay on track and gives the therapist a clear roadmap.

Parent-friendly progress trackers – Keep families informed and motivated with visual charts or simple logs. These tools also make it easier to show progress during re-evaluations.

Bonus tool: A mirror! Never underestimate the power of a good mirror in every session. Kids love watching themselves, and mirrors increase body awareness, which is key in myo.

You don’t need hundreds of gadgets—just smart, purposeful tools that support your goals. Build a toolkit that grows with you, and stay consistent in using what works.

Simon Says Speech gives you done-for-you programs, printable tools, and step-by-step support so you can focus on therapy, not prep. Check out our resource library to start simplifying your myo sessions.
